Holiday Dreams

Last weekend we were treated to a glimpse of spring. The sun was shining, the sky was blue and finally it felt like winter was waving her icy hand goodbye. Naturally, this solar bathing got me longing for a holiday… sandy beaches, quaint towns, mountain hikes, distant cities. Hopefully it won’t be long until we can go exploring again.

Rooftop Tones

Like most of the country at the moment, I am currently working from home. I live in the residential suburbs of the city so beyond the view of my little garden is a sea of rooftops. Stretching for miles they create a blanket of slate grey, with pops of warm brick set against a cold snowy sky. Weather aside, these warm and cool tones make for a pleasing colour palette.

Coastal Colours

With winter about to set in, I took the opportunity to head out to our nearest stretch of coastline whilst the temperature was still tolerable. Even on an overcast November day the colour palette of rich, muted tones could be appreciated. The dark golden sand was broken up by algae covered rocks, all set against the murky grey sea.

Winter Sun Shadows

At this time of year the shadows here in the North of England are growing longer by the day, making the smallest of objects project the longest of shadows. On my morning walk, the winter sun revealed this illusion on everything from tall tree trees to tiny blades of grass.

Time to Reflect

One of the many joys of our studio is its location. Overlooking a small tidal river we are treated to an array of wildlife and the daily turning of the tide, when the water momentarily stands perfectly still. During this time the river transforms into an almost glass like state, reflecting all that surrounds it.

Inspired Theme #04

Pheasants

That’s right, I am talking about those majestic flightless birds we see across the British countryside. Although they are not the cleverest at times (any driver will know), they make up for it with their striking plumage of fiery orange, red and deep teal tones. Last week Matthew and I were scouting locations near the Scottish Borders where they flashed through the muted grass in vast numbers.

Inspired Theme #03

Constructivism

I have always been interested in the distinct style of Constructivism, an artistic movement influencing many aspects of design to this day. Bold and impactful it is all about making a statement and catching your attention with hard lines and strong angles.

Puzzle Perfect

Whilst working from home through lockdown, to help stave off cabin fever I rekindled my love of jigsaws. With the right level of detail to both challenge and frustrate, they provide hours of entertainment. Here is my pick of which of our images would make perfect puzzle.

Inspired Theme #01

Art Deco Colour

Focusing on such a dramatic and iconic style allows for a playful take on curating images. I wanted to focus on the rich colour palette of blue and gold that so heavily features in the Art Deco movement.
